KiLiM
I am a professor in the mathematics department Guido Castelnuovo at Sapienza University and the principal investigator of the ERC Consolidator Grant project KiLiM.
KiLiM project concerns the foundations of the kinetic theory of matter: a major problem in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. The effective equations of kinetic theory are nonlinear PDEs, possibly including stochastic terms. They are approximations of particle systems ruled by the time-reversible laws of mechanics, which validity becomes exact in a limit of large system size. This line of investigation is a take on the origins of the arrow of time, and the roles of typicality, and of probability, in mathematical physics.
Kinetic Limits of Many-Body Systems focuses on large-scale limits for systems of interacting particles. A scaling limit is a precise procedure that connects very different descriptions of physical reality; such as what we can observe under a microscope, with the naked eye, or at a great distance through a telescope. We are faced with a striking diversity of behaviours and the problematic issue of transitioning from one to the other, and of their compatibility. Equally diverse are the mathematical structures that are used to model phenomena on distant scales. Studying the rigorous relation between them is a fascinating journey, involving many areas of mathematical knowledge*.
I am a member of the mathematical physics research group at the Castelnuovo Department, whose research is oriented in various directions, united by the common goal of a rigorous understanding of physical phenomena.
